The treatment
About henna
Henna, also called mehndi, is a paste made from the dried, powdered leaves of the henna plant. We apply it with a fine cone and let it dry on your skin. When the paste comes off, it leaves a pale orange stain that deepens to a reddish brown over 24–48 hours. The colour typically lasts 1–2 weeks and fades gradually as your skin sheds. Palms and soles usually stain darkest, and results vary from person to person.

Your appointment
What to expect
We talk through your design, where it will go and what the occasion is.
With your skin clean and dry, we draw the design freehand using a fine cone of henna paste.
While the paste dries, you sit back and keep still so the fine lines stay crisp.
Before you leave, we explain how long to keep the paste on and how to remove it.
Before your appointment
- On the day, wash and dry the area and skip lotion, oil and sunscreen there.
- Wear loose sleeves or open shoes so the wet paste doesn’t smudge against your clothes.
- Book any waxing, scrubs or nail appointments before your henna, as they can fade the stain afterwards.
- Planning bridal henna? Enquire early, and aim to have it applied a day or two before the wedding so the colour has time to deepen.
Aftercare
- Leave the paste on for as long as you comfortably can, as longer usually means a deeper stain.
- When you’re ready, scrape or brush the dried paste away rather than washing it off.
- Keep the area dry for the rest of the day if you can, as early contact with water may leave the colour lighter.
- Smooth on a little balm or oil, and go easy on scrubs, chlorine and hand sanitiser while the colour lasts.
Good to know
- Steer clear of ‘black henna’. It may contain PPD, a hair-dye chemical that can cause allergic skin reactions. Henna itself stains skin in shades of orange and reddish brown.
- Henna isn’t suitable if you have a henna allergy, have reacted to ‘black henna’ or hair dye in the past, or have G6PD deficiency.
- Thinking of henna for a young child? Please talk to us before you book.
- Tell us about any other allergies, including to essential oils (often mixed into henna paste), and skip henna on broken, sunburnt or irritated skin.
FAQs
Common questions
How long will my henna last?
Typically 1–2 weeks, depending on placement and aftercare. Swimming, scrubbing and frequent hand washing may fade it sooner.
My henna looks orange. Is that normal?
Yes, that’s how fresh henna starts. It darkens over the next day or two, and keeping it dry for the first day can help.
How long does a henna appointment take?
A design on one hand usually takes about 15 minutes, and both hands or both feet about 30 minutes. Larger or more detailed designs take longer. Bridal henna takes much more time, so we plan it with you at a consultation.
Do you offer henna brows?
Yes. Henna brows colour your brow hairs and the skin beneath for a fuller look. They’re part of our tinting services and need a patch test at least 24–48 hours before your first appointment.
